HINDU WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY IN LONDON BY VIVIDA

Hindu wedding ceremonies are more than just a couple declaring their love; they represent a deeper commitment to devotion, responsibility, and a common journey. These marriages contain several rites that take place before and during the ceremony, each with a distinctive significance and bringing two families together for life. For those specializing in Indian wedding photography, capturing the essence of these ceremonies requires an understanding of both cultural significance and artistic vision.

For those specializing in Indian wedding photography, capturing the essence of these ceremonies requires an understanding of both cultural significance and artistic vision.

Engagement Ceremony

The engagement is one of the oldest pre-wedding customs, celebrated with a small gathering of close family members. Unlike the traditional engagements seen in movies, Hindu engagement ceremonies gather the entire family together to celebrate the wedding day. During this ritual, the couple exchanges rings and both families make bonds to show their approval of each other.

Mehendi

The bride's family organizes the Mehendi ceremony, which is usually a women-only occasion. Female relatives from the groom's side also attend. During this festive occasion, the bride's hands and feet are decked with exquisite henna patterns. The intensity of the henna colour is supposed to represent the strength of the groom's love. Many brides include their groom's name in the henna design, making it a fun game for him to find on the wedding day. This is an opportunity for women in the family to offer knowledge to the bride and bless her new life.

Sangeet

The Sangeet is a lively festival of song and dancing that brings both families together for a friendly competition. Friends and family from both sides plan presentations, which frequently include coordinated dances and humorous music. This light-hearted celebration deepens the family tie as they laugh, applaud, and support one another, bridging any residual gaps between the two sides before the wedding.

Haldi

Both families hold separate Haldi ceremonies for the bride and groom. During this ceremony, family members apply turmeric paste to the newlyweds as a blessing and to brighten their appearance for the wedding day. Holy water is frequently sprinkled, representing purification and a new beginning. This tradition also allows elders to shower the newlyweds with blessings and well wishes, surrounding them in love and support.

Wedding Day (Mandap Ceremony)

On the wedding day, the bride and groom gather at the mandap, a sacred space decorated with holy objects and a central fire where a priest performs the wedding ceremonies. Exchanging garlands, reading vows, and the "saat phere" or seven rounds around the fire, each indicating a promise of love, fidelity, and support, are all important components of this rite. The ceremony culminates with the groom applying sindoor (red powder) to the bride's forehead to symbolize their marriage.

Fun Wedding Traditions

Hindu weddings often contain light-hearted traditions that bring joy and entertainment:

Stealing the Groom's Shoes: The bride's family makes a light-hearted attempt to take the groom's shoes. If successful, the groom must pay a fee to get them back, resulting in a heated exchange between the families.

Finding Rings in a Pot: A ring is placed in a bowl of milk, and the bride and groom compete to retrieve it. The winner is humorously dubbed the leader in marriage, often leading to playful banter.

Blocking the Groom’s Entry: The bride’s family may humorously block the groom’s entry, requiring him to negotiate (usually with money) to see his bride. This tradition adds to the playful spirit and reinforces the bond between the families.
